Tips and Tricks for Android Users
Launcher Dock
Another widget I’m running now that I have Cupcake installed is “Launcher Dock”. It’s a 1×1 widget that holds launchers for up to 8 apps. I put some of my less frequently launched (but still relatively frequently used) apps in there so that I can have all their icons on the main screen. This is a shot of my main screen with a configured Launcher Dock by the bottom right corner, just above the San Mateo weather widget:
When you tap the widget once it brings up a selector with launchers for each of the apps you’ve added plus an icon to start the widget configuration interface. Here’s what mine looks like after tapping on the widget:
And what the configuration interface looks like if you tap on that center icon:
I think it’s a pretty slick widget. Great way to increase launcher density if you have a few widgets taking up some space. And it looks pretty good there on the home screen.

ADWLauncher Settings
about 2 months ago - No comments
I’ve mentioned the preview setting in ADW Launcher previously. Recently I installed the Cyanogenmod 7.1 release on my Nexus S and started using that as my daily phone for a bit. There are a few additional settings in there I’m really liking. I like the dockbar a lot more than the main dock. What I…
Using Your Android Phone as a Remote Control
about 11 months ago - 2 comments
What I initially set out to do was find a program for my G2 that would allow me to use it as a Bluetooth trackpad and keyboard with the Mac mini I have hooked up to my television. I use it as a media PC, but it’s also a general purpose system. Every now and…
Essential Android Apps for Geeks
about 1 year ago - 2 comments
A few essential apps for those more technically minded Android users out there. If you know of others that should be in here let me know in the comments. Terminal This one is almost a no-brainer. Everyone who knows Android is Linux underneath (and who knows Linux) normally heads for a command line to check…
Samsung Captivate Tethering for OS X
about 1 year ago - 5 comments
When I plugged my Samsung Captivate into my OS X machine I was surprised to see a network connection dialog pop up on my laptop and what looked like a tethering app pop up on the device. Given that AT&T tries to kill off tethering in every way possible with the iPhone, I figured it…
On Device Packet Capture
about 1 year ago - No comments
When I need to capture network traffic from my device I normally capture traffic at a router to see what’s going on. I had seen some mentions of running tcpdump on device and pulling off the pcap file to a desktop to inspect, but Androshark was what people mentioned the most. And it didn’t seem…
Commodore 64 Emulation
about 1 year ago - No comments
I was happy to see there’s a Commodore 64 emulator in the Marketplace for Android, the Frodo emulator. I played around with a bit, but what I really wanted to do was hack around a bit with some old school basic. This is one of the computers I grew up with, and I get nostalgic…
Nook Reader for Android
about 1 year ago - No comments
Barnes & Noble released an Android version of the Nook ebook reader. It’s the same path that Amazon followed. They have a hardware device for reading ebooks. But as other mobile devices start to get more popular they also allow those devices to hook into the same content. Effectively putting your library “in the cloud”,…
Screenshot on a Rooted Device
about 1 year ago - No comments
In addition to capturing a screenshot with a computer using the Android SDK there’s also a screenshot application (available on the market, called simple ‘screenshot’, I’m not sure how to find out the package name to create a market link for it. It only works on rooted devices, but all of mine are. One nice…
ADW.Launcher Preview
about 1 year ago - 3 comments
One of the great sets of enhancements using a CyanogenMod rom instead of a stock rom is the launcher. Cyanogen includes an altered launcher called ADW.Launcher that includes lots of extra settings and interface tweeks. One of my favorite is the “preview” option, which gives you an expose (as in OS X Expose) style view…
Getting the Most Out of Froyo

If you’ve got Froyo on your phone now and you’re looking to make sure you know about all the changes, check out this Android 2.2 review from AnandTech. It walks through all the differences compared to the 2.1 release, and there are a few good points in there. Everyone knows about the hotspot functionality for…
